Classification of SpA according to ASAS criteria (Reference: Rudwaleit M, 2009)
Definition
The criteria were originally designed to detect rheumatic back inflammation early in the course of the disease. However, experience has shown that the part of the criteria that does not include CT or X-ray changes is not good enough for use in clinical practice.
Prerequisites
- Age at start of symptoms is less than 45 years
- Inflammatory back pain
- One divide SpA in Two main groups:
- Radiological sakroiliitis (on CT or X-rays) + one SpA item (see below)
- HLA B27 + Two SpA items (see below)
SpA items:
- Inflammatory back pain (see above)
- Arthritis
- Entesitis (inflamed Achilles tendon or plantar fascia fixings in feet)
- Uveitis (anterior) (eye inflammation)
- Psoriasis
- Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
- Good effect of NSAID (Volteran / diclofenac etc)
- Family with SpA (first or second degree family)
- HLA B27
- Elevated CRP (Related to rheumatic ailments)
